Canby’s Mountain Lover (Paxistima canbyi) is an evergreen groundcover that grows naturally in upland open woods, wooded slopes, and limestone bluffs and cliffs. It is considered rare throughout its native range and should be protected from winter sun and wind. This evergreen shrub has dark green foliage through summer that sometimes develops a bronze tint in winter. Inconspicuous small green flowers appear in spring and give way to seed capsules. Canby’s Mountain Lover is commonly used in rock gardens, as a low hedge, and in woodland gardens.

Conservation Status: Listed as threatened in Kentucky and as endangered in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, and Tennessee.
