Blackhaw Viburnum (Viburnum prunifolium) is a large, upright, flowering shrub. It can reach heights of 12-15′ or more if grown as a single trunk tree. It most often grows in moist woodlands or streambanks, so keep this in mind when choosing a planting site. It blooms in late spring with many clusters of white, fragrant flowers that attract a variety of native pollinators. The flowers give way to dark blue, berry-like drupes that can last into winter and are a good food source for birds and wildlife. Like other viburnums, the berries are edible and can be eaten off the bush or made into jams and preserves. Blackhaw Viburnum is a larval host for the Hummingbird Clearwing moth (shown above), among others.
