Black Raspberry (Rubus occidentalis) is a deciduous shrub that forms colonies or thickets. It grows naturally in open woods, thickets, stream banks, and wet meadows. Small white flowers bloom from spring to early summer and attract native pollinators. The blooms are followed by edible purple-black fruits that can be eaten raw or cooked. The thorny stems provide cover and habitat for birds and small mammals, and native bees will nest in the dead, hollow stems. Black Raspberry is a larval host for the Striped Hairstreak (shown above), among others.
