  • Description

Sheep Laurel (Kalmia angustifolia) is a small evergreen shrub that grows naturally in moist bogs or swamps, disturbed sites, roadsides, and dry pine forests. It commonly grows on sites that are typically dry in the summer and damp or even flooded in the spring. The showy, saucer-shaped, bright pink flowers bloom in clusters in summer, and they attract bees, butterflies, and other native pollinators. Sheep Laurel leaves are typically blue-green, turning reddish-green to purple in the fall, and it provides nesting habitat and cover for small birds. Sheep Laurel is toxic to sheep and other livestock, hence on of the the common names “Sheepkill”. It is a larval host to the Columbia Silkmoth (shown above), among others.
