Adam’s Needle (Yucca filamentosa) is a broadleaf, evergreen shrub (though it looks more like a perennial than a shrub) that grows naturally on beaches, sand dunes, and fields. The sharply pointed leaves grow in a clumping, basal rosette. A tall panicle of showy, long-lasting, creamy white, bell-shaped flowers appears late spring to early summer, attracting native hummingbirds and moths. The flowers are edible and taste somewhat like bitter artichoke and can be used fresh in salads, cooked in soups or stews, or roasted. Yuccas have a symbiotic relationship with Yucca moths. These moths pollinate the plants, then lay eggs in the immature seed capsules.
