Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria) is a thicket-forming, multi-stemmed broadleaf evergreen shrub or small tree that grows naturally in sandy woodlands, coastal dunes, open fields, forest edges, and wet swamps. It has a dense, upright to rounded habit and features small, elliptic to ovate-oblong, leathery, glossy dark green leaves with finely toothed margins. Small greenish-white flowers appear early in spring. Yaupon Holly is dioecious, and only female plants produce the bright red berry-like fruits that ripen in fall and often persist through winter. These fruits provide outstanding ornamental interest as well as an important winter food source for birds and small mammals. It serves as a larval host plant for the Henry’s Elfin and Holly Azure butterflies, while its flowers attract bees and other pollinators. The dense evergreen branching provides valuable year-round cover and nesting habitat for wildlife.
