  • Description

Keystone Value: The genus Rosa (Rose) supports over 100 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.

Woods’ Rose (Rosa woodsii) is a bushy, deciduous shrub that grows naturally in open woods, plains, stream banks, and stony slopes. It can form thickets and is often used in the landscape for erosion control. The showy flowers bloom in clusters in a variety of pink shades. These give way to orange-red rose hips that can be eaten or used in tea. The hips persist through the winter and are an essential food source for a variety of birds and mammals. Wood’s Rose is a larval host to the Columbia silkmoth (shown above), among others.
