Keystone Value: The genus Picea (Spruce) supports over 150 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.

White Spruce (Picea glauca) is a large, pyramidal, evergreen tree that grows naturally in upland areas and lake/stream margins. The needles have a white waxy coating, hence the common name White Spruce. Its slender seed cones start out green or ruddy-colored, and turn brown 4-8 months after pollination. White Spruce is commonly used as a specimen tree or as a privacy screen, and it is a valuable source of cover and habitat for native birds and small mammals.
