Keystone Value: The genus Crataegus (Hawthorn) supports over 150 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.

Washington Hawthorn (Crataegus phaenopyrum) is a low-branching deciduous tree known for its beautiful white flowers and bright red fruit. The flowers are an important nectar source for bees and other pollinators, and the berries are enjoyed by native wildlife. The Hawthorn has spike-like thorns that can be 1-3 inches, and a strong gray trunk. This plant prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun, but is tolerant to a wide range of soils and heat. Its colorful fall foliage looks gorgeous in any garden, and its low, thick branches can be used to provide a screen for privacy or security. Washington Hawthorn is a larval host plant for the Viceroy butterfly (Limenitis archippus), among others.
