Vernal Witchhazel (Hamamelis vernalis) is the early-spring-blooming variety of Witchhazel, a deciduous shrub that spreads by suckers to form large colonies over time. In late winter/early spring, fragrant blooms emerge along the branches when little else is flowering in the landscape. Each flower features four crumpled, ribbon-like petals that range in color from yellow to deep red, surrounding a dull red calyx cup. Following flowering, the plant produces small two-valved capsules that split open when mature containing two seeds that are eaten by native birds. Native Americans traditionally boiled the twigs to make medicine used to soothe wounds, muscle soreness, and insect bites. Vernal Witchhazel provides a valuable source of nectar and pollen during late winter/early spring, when few other plants are in bloom. This makes it an important resource for early-emerging pollinators at a time when food sources are scarce.
