Sweet Gum (Liquidambar styraciflua) is a large deciduous tree that grows naturally in wet river bottoms, in swamps that frequently flood, and on drier uplands. It is commonly used in landscaping as a shade tree. The leaves of the Sweet Gum tree have 5-7 distinct star shaped lobes and turn brilliant yellow, orange, red, and purple in the fall, making it a popular ornamental tree. The small flowers that appear in spring are insignificant, though they do attract pollinators. The flowers give way to spherical, spikey fruit (sometimes called gumballs) containing seeds which are eaten by songbirds and small mammals. Sweet Gum is a larval host for the beautiful Luna Moth (shown above), among others.
