Swamp Titi (Cyrilla racemiflora) is a semi-evergreen, thicket-forming shrub or small tree that grows naturally in bottomlands, swamps, wet pinelands, and along streambanks. In late spring showy clusters of white flowers bloom on elongated racemes that emerge from the current season’s growth. These blooms are followed by small, rounded brown seed capsules that persist through the winter months. Stems and branches have a distinctly distorted growth pattern. The glossy green leaves are lighter beneath and provide attractive fall color, gradually turning shades of yellow, orange, and burgundy before winter. Swamp Titi is an excellent pollinator plant, with bees producing a distinctive dark honey from its nectar. Its fruits are consumed by a variety of birds and mammals, while its foliage is occasionally browsed by white-tailed deer.
