Keystone Value: The genus Acer (Maple) supports over 280 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.
Striped Maple (Acer pensylvanicum) is a small, deciduous, shade-tolerant tree that grows naturally in rich, shady woods. Younger branches have greenish, striped bark (hance the common name Striped Maple) that turns reddish-brown as it ages. Small yellow flowers bloom on drooping racemes in April, providing an early-season nectar source for native pollinators. In autumn, the green leaves turn a bright, attractive yellow. Striped Maple is a larval host for the Imperial Moth (shown above), among many others.
