Keystone Value: The genus Malus (Crabapple) supports over 300 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.

Southern Crabapple (Malus angustifolia) is a small deciduous tree that grows naturally in moist woods, woodland borders, and old fields. In spring, fragrant, showy, pale pink flowers bloom, providing an essential early-season pollen source for native pollinators. The edible yellow-green fruit is small (less than an inch wide), and can be used for jelly, preserves, and cider. The fruit is also a food source for birds and small woodland mammals. Southern Crabapple is a larval host for the Viceroy butterfly (shown above), among many others.
