Purple Chokeberry (Aronia x prunifolia) is a naturally occurring hybrid of the Red Chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia) and the Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa). This upright, deciduous shrub grows as thickets in bogs, meadows and along riverbanks. In the spring it blooms with white to pink-tinged flowers that turn into clusters of small purple fruits that last throughout the fall and into winter. Although the fruits are extremely tart when eaten fresh, they are commonly used to make jams, jellies, and preserves. The glossy, dark green foliage transforms into brilliant shades of deep red and burgundy in autumn, creating a striking display and adding multi-season appeal to the landscape. While Purple Chokeberry is self-fertile, planting it near other chokeberry species can help increase pollination and maximize fruit production.
