Keystone Value: The genus Betula (Birch) supports over 400 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.
Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera) can be trained to be a multi-trunked shorter tree, or the taller single-trunked version. It is a larval host plant for the Luna Moth (shown above), and also supports Eastern Tiger Swallowtail larvae. The Paper Birch’s shallow roots can tolerate a range of soil types, but it does best with moist, acidic soil and in cool, northern climates. While it can thrive in partial shade, the best foliage color appears when the tree is in full sun. The dark green leaves turn a striking yellow in the fall. Its white bark can develop black markings in maturity, and peels in papery strips to reveal an orangey-pink inside. Small greenish male and female flowers will appear in separate catkins in the spring, followed by drooping conical fruits that mature in the late summer. Fun fact: the Paper Birch is the state tree of New Hampshire!
