Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra) is a small to medium sized deciduous tree that grows naturally in rich or rocky wooded areas of valleys, ravines, bluff bases, slopes, and thickets. The palmate leaves are initially bright green, turning dark green in the summer, and the fall color is usually yellow, but sometimes shades of orange or red. Small red, yellow, to yellow-green flowers bloom on long panicles in early spring and attract butterflies and other native pollinators. The fruit that follows (buckeyes) are encased in spiny capsules. Ohio Buckeye is commonly used in naturalized, woodland areas of the landscape. It is a larval host for the Luna moth (shown above), among others.
