Mountain Maple (Acer spicatum) is a deciduous, shade-tolerant small tree or large shrub that grows naturally in mountainous areas. Small greenish-yellow flowers bloom on racemes in early summer. These blooms are an important source of nectar for a variety of pollinators, and the tree is a larval host for the Imperial Moth. Its simple leaves, have 3 or 5 lobes and turn from yellow to orange to red in the fall. The sugary sap can be collected and boiled down to make maple syrup. Mountain Maple is ideal for using as erosion control as it grows well on steep slopes and streambanks and can form into dense thickets.
