Kalm’s St. John’s Wort (Hypericum kalmianum) is small, dense, semi-evergreen shrub that grows naturally along lakes, rivers, and cliffs. The bright yellow flowers bloom in late summer and attract bees, butterflies, and other native pollinators. It prefers medium soil and full sun, and it works well as a low hedge or a in a rock garden. Pruning, if needed, should be done after flowering in the early fall. It should be noted that the leaves of this plant are toxic to pets.

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE

Shrubby St. John’s Wort, Bushy St. John’s Wort, and Kalm’s St. John’s Wort are very similar shrubs with a few distinguishing features. Shrubby St. John’s Wort has a more open habit, the leaves are larger, and the flowers are also larger and less likely to bloom in clusters. Kalm’s St. John’s Wort is the smallest (growing 2-3 feet). While their native ranges do have some overlap, Bushy St. John’s Wort has a more eastern and southern coastal range, Shrubby St. John’s Wort has a range that extends into the western United States, and Kalm’s St. John’s Wort has a more northern/Midwest range that reaches into Canada.
