  • Description

Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) is a large evergreen tree that grows naturally in prairies, oak barrens, old pastures, limestone hills, and along highways. It tolerates a wide range of soils except constantly wet soils, and while it can grow up to 65′ tall, it is shrubby when grown in poor soil. The juniper berries produced by female trees are an important winter food source for birds and small mammals, and the cones on male trees produce a large amount of pollen that attracts butterflies, moths, and other pollinators. Eastern Red Cedar provides winter shelter for native wildlife and is the larval host for the Juniper Hairstreak butterfly (shown above). It is often used in landscaping as a specimen tree, screen, or windbreak.

*Note: Our selection of Eastern Red Cedar is a mixed lot of male and female plants. We cannot guarantee which you will receive.
