Dwarf Witchalder (Fothergilla gardenii) is a dwarf deciduous shrub that grows 1 1/2 to 3 feet tall. It thrives best in moist soil and full sun to partial shade. Its white, bottlebrush flowers have a honey-like scent that attracts native bees and a number of other pollinators. In autumn the foliage turns bright yellow, orange, and red, making it visually impressive year-round. Named for British physician and botanist John Fothergill, this low-maintenance shrub is ideal for a cottage garden, children’s garden, or to create a low hedge.
