Dwarf Serviceberry (Amelanchier spicata) is a small, deciduous shrub that grows naturally in meadows, forest edges, and fields. Small, white flowers bloom in early spring, attracting a wide variety of early-season pollinators. The reddish burgundy fruit that appears in the summer is edible and can be eaten raw, dried, or in baked goods. They are also a popular food source for native birds and small mammals. In fall, the leaves transform into an attractive yellow-gold. Dwarf Serviceberry is a larval host for the Striped Hairstreak (shown above), among others.
