Coralberry (Symphoricarpos orbiculatus) is a small, mounding, deciduous shrub that grows naturally in open woods, fields, pastures and thickets. The greenish-white flower clusters that bloom in summer are not showy, but they attract bees and other native pollinators. This native shrub puts on a real show in fall when the coral-red fruit ripens, covering the arching branches in an abundance of berries. These berries are an important food source for birds, small mammals, and other native wildlife. The berries that persist into winter along with the shredding bark on the woody stems gives Coralberry winter interest in the native garden. It is often used as a hedge or as erosion control on slopes.
