Common Hoptree (Ptelea trifoliata) is a deciduous small tree or large shrub that grows naturally along rocky bluffs and in open woodlands. It develops a slender, often crooked trunk with interwoven, ascending branches that give the plant a distinctive form. Small clusters of greenish-white flowers appear among the leaves in spring, followed by unique, round samaras with broad, papery wings. These attractive fruits may persist into winter, providing seasonal interest as well as a food source for birds and small mammals. Common Hoptree’s ability to tolerate shade makes it an excellent choice for understory plantings and woodland gardens. It also provides important wildlife value as a larval host plant for the Giant Swallowtail butterfly. The common name ‘Hoptree’ refers to the historical use of its bitter fruits as a substitute for hops in brewing beer.
