Keystone Value: The genus Picea (Spruce) supports over 150 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.

Colorado Blue Spruce (Picea pungens) is a medium to large, pyramidal evergreen that grows naturally in moist locations from 6,000 to 11,000 feet. It needs consistently moist soil when young, but once established it becomes more drought tolerant. The needles are an attractive green to blue-green to silver-blue color, and the tree is commonly used as a specimen tree or as a privacy screen.
