Climbing Aster (Ampelaster carolinianus) is an ungainly shrub that is often trained as a vine.  It grows naturally on marshy shorelines, stream banks, swamp edges, and moist woods. It produces clusters of blooms with narrow, lavender petals surrounding a yellow center. These blooms appear in fall, providing an important source of late-season pollen and nectar to native pollinators. The seeds provide food for birds and small mammals, and it is a larval host to the Pearl Crescent butterfly (shown above).
