Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) is a small, deciduous, thicket-forming tree that grows naturally on wooded slopes, bluffs, ravines, and along woodland edges. It provides multi-season interest with its fragrant white flower clusters in spring, followed by dark red to purple-black fruit that ripen in late summer. In fall, the leaves turn shades of golden yellow to orange, adding vibrant seasonal color. The fruit are an important food source for many birds and small mammals, while the dense branching habit provides valuable cover and nesting habitat. Chokeberry fruit are edible for humans when cooked and are commonly used to make jellies, syrups, wines, and preserves. Chokecherry also serves as the larval host for the Columbia silkmoth, making it an excellent choice for supporting native wildlife.
