Keystone Value: The genus Prunus (Cherry/Plum) supports over 450 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.
Chickasaw Plum (Prunus angustifolia) is a deciduous, thicket-forming, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree that grows naturally in open woodlands, forest edges, prairies, and meadows. Small white flowers bloom in spring before leaves are formed, and they attract a multitude of native pollinators. The small, cherry-like fruit that appears in the summer ripens from gold-yellow to red-burgundy. While the fruit is edible, the flavor is tart, and it is best used in jams and preserves. Please note that the pits of the fruit are mildly toxic. Chickasaw Plum is a larval host for the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (shown above), among others.
