Carolina Cherry Laurel (Prunus caroliniana) is a broadleaf evergreen shrub (or small tree) that is native to the southern United States. It grows naturally in low woods, fields, and thickets. The fragrant white flowers bloom in dense clusters from late winter into early spring, attracting bees, butterflies, and other native pollinators. The fruit that follows ripens from red to black and is eaten by songbirds. The fresh leaves have a cherry fragrance when crushed. Carolina Cherry Laurel is a larval host for the Viceroy butterfly (shown above), among others.

Please note, the leaves, seeds, and stems of this plant are poisonous.
