Bladdernut (Staphylea trifolia) is a fast-growing large shrub/small tree that grows naturally in bottomlands, woodland thickets, and along streams. In spring it produces drooping clusters of cream bell-shaped flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other native pollinators. The distinctive fruit ripens in late summer, forming inflated, bladder-like, egg-shaped, papery seed capsules. The seed inside provides food for native wildlife, and humans can eat them both raw and cooked. They can be used as a replacement for walnuts in baking recipes. Bladdernut works well in rain gardens, and its suckering habit makes it a perfect choice for a hedge.
