Black Huckleberry (Gaylussacia baccata) is a native shrub in the blueberry family. It is often found in high-elevation woodland areas, and its shallow spreading root system can help prevent erosion. It prefers sandy or rocky soil, and sun, and can grow to be 3 feet tall and 4-5 feet wide. In the fall, this usually green shrub joins the autumnal celebration with its leaves turning beautiful hues of red and orange. Springtime brings small red and pink urn-shaped flowers, perfect for native pollinators. After the flowers, you’ll find plump berries turning blue-black, which entice local wildlife. The berries are sweet and can be eaten raw, jellied, or cooked into baked goods. The Black Huckleberry is also a larval host to the Henry’s Elfin butterfly (shown above).
