Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a deciduous shrub easily identified by its unique berry clusters. The profusion of fruit results in clusters that wrap completely around the branches in beautiful violet/magenta rings. It produces the most fruit in a sunny location, but Beautyberry also thrives in shadier spots. Flowers form on new growth, so pruning this shrub after the berries are gone increases the following year’s fruit production.
This shrub is an important food source for wildlife in the winter, as it keeps its berries long after the leaves have dropped. Beautyberry is also host to the Rustic Sphinx Moth (pictured above). Its wildlife benefits and distinctive features make Beautyberry a valuable addition to any garden!
