American Snowbell (Styrax americanus) is a deciduous shrub or small tree that grows naturally in swamps and on floodplains and other wet locations. The white, showy, bell-shaped flowers bloom singly or in clusters, and their mild fragrance attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Birds feed on the hairy fruits that appear in autumn. American Snowbell is a larval host for the Promethea Silkmoth (shown above). It does well as a specimen, but does not compete well with other shrubs or trees.
