Yellowroot (Xanthorhiza simplicissima) is a mat-like, spreading, deciduous shrub that grows naturally in damp woods, wet depressions, and stream banks. Its roots are yellow, hence the common name, and Native Americans would use the roots to make a yellow dye. The small, star-shaped, maroon flowers grow on on 2-8″ long terminal clusters. The blooms are insignificant, however Yellowroot’s fall color is strikingly attractive with leaves turning yellow to reddish purple. As a landscape shrub, Yellowroot is often used as a groundcover, and it provides understory food and habitat for a variety of birds and small mammals.
