Wooly Pipevine (Aristolochia tomentosa) is a deciduous twining vine that grows naturally along streams and in moist woods. It can grow rapidly up to 20 or 30 feet, and it’s ideal for growing over an arbor or trellis or along a privacy fence. Wooly Pipevine has large, attractive, heart-shaped leaves, and the yellowish-green interestingly-shaped but inconspicuous flowers are usually hidden by the leaves. Another common name is Dutchman’s Pipe due to the flowers’ similarity to European Meerschaum smoking pipes. The leaves, young stems, and flowers are hairy, and in fall it produces grayish-brown seed capsules that provide food for a variety of wildlife. Wooly Pipevine can be pruned in late winter to control growth. It is a larval host for the Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly (shown above).
