Wild Senna (Senna hebecarpa) is a showy, herbaceous wildflower that grows naturally in moist open woods. In summer racemes bloom with golden yellow 5-petal flowers. These flowers typically whiten as they age in mid to late summer and turn into dark brown seedpods in the winter giving the plant year round interest. The smooth, compound leaves are oblong and often gray-green in color. The Cherokee used Wild Senna for medicinal purposes, making a treatment for fevers with the roots. Wild Senna attracts birds, bumblebees, and other native pollinators and is a larval host for the Cloudless Sulphur butterfly.Â
