Keystone Value: The genus Pinus (Pine) supports over 200 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.

White Pine (Pinus strobus) is a large evergreen conifer tree that enjoys full sun and cool, humid climates. It is tolerant to a wide range of soil types, but prefers moist, well-drained sandy loams. Fairly recognizable as the quintessential Christmas tree, the White Pine boasts soft bluish-green needles and gorgeous pine cones. It provides shelter for a variety of birds and small mammals, and supports Imperial Moth larvae (shown above), among many others.
