Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica) is recognizable by its beautiful blue, bell-shaped flowers, which bloom from pink buds in the spring. It is a spring ephemeral and goes dormant by mid-summer, but while in bloom, it attracts a number of pollinators, including native bumblebees, moths and hummingbirds. This plant flourishes in partial to deep shade and moist soil with good drainage. Indigenous Americans used it to treat tuberculosis and whooping cough.
