Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a tall, clump-forming ornamental grass that grows naturally in prairies, open woods and streambanks.  In mid-summer pink-tinged, branched flower panicles form an airy cloud of blooms over the stems. The leaves turn an attractive yellow-orange in the fall that fades to a light brown throughout the winter, providing year round interest. It is drought tolerant and deer resistant and can be planted by black walnut trees. Seed pods last throughout the winter and are an important source of food for birds and small mammals.
