Soft Rush (Juncus effusus) is a clump forming, wetland perennial with green, smooth, upright stems instead of leaves. Although these stems appear coarse and stiff, they are quite soft, and it is considered to be one of the true rushes. It is often found growing in ditches, bogs, swamps, and marshes, and along lakes and rivers. It gets small yellowish-green blooms in clusters on the side of the stems in late summer to early fall. It self seeds and spreads pretty easily and is a nice plant to use to fill in a garden as the taller clumps provide vertical interest. They make a statement at the edge of a pond or water garden, in boggy and wet areas, among wet pebbles or rocks, or in shallow standing water. They are also useful in controlling soil erosion on moist hills.
