Snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) is a rounded, arching, deciduous shrub that spreads to form dense thickets and grows naturally in shady and moist mountains and forests, in woodlands and on floodplains and riverbanks. Clusters of tiny, bell-shaped, pink flowers bloom in summer and attract native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. These flowers are followed by white berries (hence the common name Snowberry) that persist through winter. Snowberry grows in full sun to part shade, but best fruit production occurs in full sun. The berries are a food source for a wide variety of birds and mammals, and the branches provide cover and nesting material for wildlife. It is commonly used as a hedge, for erosion control, and in ecological restoration projects. Snowberry is the larval host for the Snowberry Clearwing (shown above), among others.
