Small’s Beardtongue (Penstemon smallii)  is a tall, herbaceous perennial native to the southeastern United States that naturally grows in glades, barrens, bluffs, and rocky slopes. Shiny, lanceolate leaves with prominent dark veins grow on its attractive purple stems, adding ornamental interest even when the plant is not in bloom. In late spring to early summer, it produces showy spikes of pink to purple tubular flowers with white throats marked by purple stripes that can last for up to four weeks. While Small’s Beardtongue prefers consistently moist soil, it does not tolerate wet feet and performs best in well-drained locations. Its tolerance for rocky, well-drained conditions makes it an excellent choice for rock gardens, slopes, and naturalized plantings. The long-lasting flowers attract a variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making it a valuable addition to native and pollinator-friendly landscapes.
