Sideoats (Bouteloua curtipendula) is a native ornamental grass that grows naturally in glades, prairies, and open rocky woodlands. It forms dense clumps up to 1.5 feet tall, and is deep rooted making it an ideal candidate for bank stabilization and prairie restoration. Tiny, purplish-tinged flowers bloom on arching stalks that can grow up to 3 feet tall, followed by oat-like seeds. The foliage turns golden brown in fall and occasionally develops an orange or reddish hue. Sideoats can be used as a substitute for turf grass and mowed down to 2-4 inches tall.
