Keystone Value: The genus Solidago (Goldenrod) supports over 120 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.
Showy Goldenrod (Solidago speciosa) is an upright, native perennial that grows naturally in fields, prairies and open woods. As the name suggests, this is one of the showiest of the many varieties of goldenrods. It has small narrow leaves and tiny, bright yellow flowers that grow on club-shaped terminal clusters providing late summer to early fall interest for gardens. Showy Goldenrod attracts a variety of pollinators and is larval host for the Wavy-lined Emerald Moth. It often gets blamed for fall allergies, though the real culprit is ragweed!
