Keystone Value: The genus Populus (Poplar, Cottonwood, Aspen) supports over 350 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.

Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) is a medium to large deciduous tree that can grow 20-50′ in height. The leaf petioles are long and flat, causing the leaves to “shake” pleasantly in the wind, hence the name Quaking Aspen. In autumn, the foliage turns a bright golden yellow, and the white bark provides striking winter interest. It prefers full sun with humusy, moist, well-draining soil, although in nature it can be found in a variety of soil conditions. Quaking Aspen will commonly form stands, and for this reason it makes an excellent visual and noise screen. Not only is it a keystone species that hosts hundreds of caterpillars (including the Viceroy Butterfly pictured above), but it also provides habitat and food for a variety of birds and mammals.
