Purple Poppy Mallow (Callirhoe involucrata) is a perennial groundcover that grows naturally in open woods and on rocky hills in shrublands and thickets. It is tolerant of almost any dry to medium soil in full sun and forms into a thick mat, often used in garden borders and draped along walls. The showy, cup-shaped flowers have 5 magenta petals with a white spot at the base, attracting native pollinators. Flowers appear in late spring and bloom throughout the summer. Purple Poppy Mallow has a deep taproot that helps with increased drought and dry soil tolerance. It is a larval host for the Gray Hairstreak Butterfly (shown above) as well as the Checkered Skipper.
