Purple Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a rapid-growing vine that grows naturally in sandy soils, low moist woods, and open areas. It is woody in the southern part of its range, but dies back to the ground in colder winter climates. It can be left to spread as a groundcover or trained to grow along an arbor, trellis, or fence. Purple Passionflower’s most identifying feature is the showy, unique blooms that appear in late summer. The narrow purplish- white petals provide a backdrop for a central crown of pinkish-purple filaments, and the nectar attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and other native pollinators. The yellowish fruit are called maypops and can be eaten fresh off the vine or made into jelly, but please note that the leaves and stems are moderately poisonous to humans and pets. Purple Passionflower is a larval host to the majestic looking Zebra Longwing (shown above) among others.
