Keystone Value: The genus Rubus (Blackberry, Raspberry) supports over 120 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.

Purple Flowering Raspberry (Rubus odoratus) is a perennial shrub that grows naturally in upland forests, boulder fields, rock outcrops, thickets, and substrates. It dislikes clay, high humidity, and high temperatures and needs good air circulation. Purple Flowering Raspberry is often used as an ornamental shrub due to its attractive flowers and fruit. The rose-like, long-blooming, fragrant flowers give way to cup-shaped red fruits that are edible to humans but are generally dry, crumbly, and unappetizing. The maple-like leaves turn golden in the fall, and the hairy stems have virtually no prickles. Purple Flowering Raspberry attracts native pollinators and provides nesting material for beneficial native bees, and the fruit feeds birds and small mammals. It is a larval host to the Lettered Habrosyne or Scribe moth (shown above), among many others.
