  • Description

Prairie Coneflower (Ratibida pinnata) is a native perennial that grows naturally in fields, prairies, and dry open woods and is adaptable to dry to moist conditions and various soils. The flowers bloom on stems 3′ – 5′ tall and have a dull gray central disk (hence another common name Gray-head Coneflower) that smells of anise when crushed. The seeds produced are eaten by goldfinches and other songbirds. Surrounding the disk are bright yellow, downward-pointing petals that can reach 3″ long, attracting bees and other native pollinators. Prairie Coneflower is a larval host to the Silvery Checkerspot butterfly (shown above). It looks best planted in a mass, and is commonly used in meadow or prairie gardens.
