Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) is a medium-sized deciduous tree that grows naturally in dry woods, old field, and clearings. The fragrant, bell-shaped, yellow flowers are usually hidden by the leaves and attract native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The leaves become yellow-green in the fall. The edible fruit is round or oval and typically orange-yellow, and fruiting usually begins when the tree is about 6 years old. The fruit has sweetish astringent pulp, but the flavor improves after a frost or consistent low temperatures. Fruits can be eaten by humans raw, cooked, or dried, and are often used in syrups, jam, ice cream, and pies. They are also eaten by birds and small mammals. We recommend buying 3 Persimmon trees to have a better chance of getting both a male and female tree. Persimmon is a larval host for the Luna moth (shown above), among others.
